The Site Fights
The Site Fights was the first competition ever! As far as is known, they have been open since 1996 in various formats aside from a short amount of time they were closed in 2001. Please read on to learn more about The Site Fights or TSF and how it all began :)
Founded:
As far as is known, they began sometime in 1996 when Dman wanted to try and promote his website, and began a small competition on his site in order to do so.
Founded by:
Dman - his real name is Darryl Dickinson.
Opening Date:
Sometime in 1996
Reason Opened:
Dman wanted to get more visitors to his site, so he came up with the idea of holding a competition to help get visitors to other peoples personal sites, and also bringing him more visitors at the same time. Clearly, it worked and their competition quickly became very popular.
VE or NVE:
Vote Exchange.
Slogan:
Where they're fighin' for fun and Friendship Begun!
Original Ideas:
Well, The Site Fights was the very first competition to begin with. They also invented both vote exchanging and the 'spirit' of the competition - something which all of us feels, and luckily TSF defined it for us. The Site Fights also came up with 'growing flowers/images' which is quite popular on the internet. They developed 'spirit pages' and 'cheering' - both of which are important factors in competitions to this day. They set the path for future web competitions and many concepts in web competitions today actually came from The Site Fights, and have been handed down from web competition to web competition over the years.
History:
From the information that I've gathered, The Site Fights started in 1996 and was originally called sjWeb's Site Fights. In 1997 the name changed to 'The Site Fights' and TSF got its own domain. The Site Fights ran smoothly until 1998 when a bunch of people left and two other competitions were started. These two were The Web Brawls and The Rumbles. The people who started The Web Brawls had gotten into an argument with Dman and The Rumbles was opened by a former site fighter to have a competition that was different from the others.
The Site Fights continued running until in June 2000 there was another rift. This time a few team leaders were leaving because they didn't feel they had enough sites on their teams, and Dman had agreed to open two more teams. His belief was that it didn't matter how many sites you had on your team - it was the spirit that mattered.
The people who left The Site Fights opened up a new competition called The Site Wars, and they also tried to destroy some of TSF's pages and teams before they left completely.
At some point early in 2001 The Site Fights had to shut down because of server/domain issues. They thought things would get sorted out quickly, but that wasn't the case, and by May the competitors were still waiting around, so Dman officially shut The Site Fights down until things could get sorted out. While TSF was shut down a number of changes occurred: several of the teams held their own 'mini-comps' until TSF was back online again, two teams left TSF to move to Avalon Adventures, and one team moved to The Web Brawls.
The Site Fights reopened on June 25, 2001 and as far as is known, didn't shut down again for any time until August, 2006. During August & September, 2006 TSF was shut down so that the smaller teams could be merged with other smaller teams in the competition, and TSF was then re-opened towards the end of September.
